In an effort to increase clinical opportunities for our growing student nursing population and to improve the nursing shortage in Mississippi, ONW has implemented a web-based clinical placement program. This program will enable educators and clinicians to maximize the available clinical settings with the educational experiences needed for nursing students.

StudentMAX®
Clinical Placement Software

StudentMAX® is a centralized clinical placement software program designed to match available clinical sites with the needs of the schools of nursing student experiences. It is a web-based tool available to schools of nursing, hospital managers, and students. The program will provide accurate and timely information and communication to all partners. The Office of Nursing Workforce will manage the database.

StudentMAX® will give both the schools and the clinical partners a snapshot view of how many students are scheduled each semester, what units they are on, and which days and shifts each have been assigned.

The site will include information pertaining to clinical site requirements such as faculty checklists, student checklists, driving directions, manager contact information and unit descriptions.

It will also include information about educational programs such as program descriptions, faculty contact information, driving directions, academic calendars and unit descriptions.

StudentMAX® will save valuable time for faculty and healthcare administrators by providing a “one stop” website for expressing clinical needs and offering clinical opportunities for nursing students.

This web-based tool has confirmed a proven ability to increase placement capacity in addition to saving valuable time and resources for schools and clinical sites. Since implementation of the program in 2006 the Jackson-Vicksburg region, which was the pilot, has demonstrated a 33% increase of clinical opportunities for the spring semesters and a 40% increase of clinical opportunities for the fall semesters from 2005-2008. With proven success, StudentMax® was implemented in the Delta region in 2007. The ultimate goal is for ONW to replicate StudentMax® statewide for all Mississippi schools of nursing.
