Mississippi High School Mentorship Academy 2010

In the fall 2009, the Mississippi Office of Nursing Workforce, along with our funding partners, provided support for eight (8) Mentorship Academies throughout Mississippi. 
A total of 134 high school seniors were given the opportunity to see firsthand what it would be like to work in a hospital/health care environment.  

Funded by: The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Minority Health to the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Institute for Improvement of Minority Health and Health Disparities in the Delta Region

Hattiesburg Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

Partners:      
Hattiesburg High School
Forrest General Hospital
Pearl River Community College for CNA

  • 11 students began 8-week Mentorship Academy at Forrest General Hospital
  • 11 students completed the 8-week Mentorship Academy
  • Graduation sponsored by Forrest General Hospital and ONW as held
  • 8 students completed the CNA course at Pearl River Community College
  • 4 students took the CNA examination. 
  • 2 passed and were certified

 

Gulf Coast Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

Singing River Health Systems
Key’s Technology Center
Ocean Springs High School
Gulf Coast Community College for CNA

  • 15 students began 8-week Mentorship Academy at Ocean Springs Hospital and Singing River Hospital simultaneously
  • 15 students completed the 8-week Mentorship Academy
  • Graduation sponsored by Singing River Health Systems and ONW was held
  • 14 students completed the Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Program at MS Gulf Coast Community College
  • 9 students took the CNA examination
  • 7 passed and were certified

 

Greenwood/Leflore High School Mentorship Academy

Greenwood Leflore Hospital
MS Delta Community College for CNA Course

  • 19 students began the Mentorship Academy
  • 19 students completed the Mentorship Academy
  • A graduation ceremony sponsored by Greenwood Leflore Hospital and ONW was held 
  • 9 students began a CNA course at Mississippi Delta Community College and completed the skills training at Golden Age Nursing Home
  • 9 students took the CNA examination
  • 4 student passed and were certified

 
Natchez Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

Cathedral High School
Adams County Christian School
Natchez Community Hospital
Co-Lin Community College for CNA Course

  • 6 students began the Mentorship Academy
  • 6 students completed the Mentorship Academy
  • A graduation ceremony sponsored by Natchez Community Hospital and ONW was held
  • 6 students completed the CNA course at Co-Lin Community College at Natchez
  • 5 students took the CNA examination
  • 5 students passed and were certified

United Way/Way to Work Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

United Way of Monroe County (Way to Work Project)
Monroe High Schools, Allied Health, and GED program
Itawamba Community College for CNA Course
Pioneer Community Hospital of Aberdeen

  • 19 students began 7-week Mentorship Academy (2 groups for 7-weeks each) at Pioneer Community Hospital of Aberdeen
  • 19 students completed the 7-week Mentorship Academy
  • 19 students completed the CNA program at Itawamba Community College
  • 19 passed and were certified

 

North Mississippi Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

Healthcare Foundation of North Mississippi
Itawamba Community College for CNA Course

  • 10 students began 7-week Mentorship Academy at North Mississippi Medical Center
  • 10 students completed the 7-week Mentorship Academy
  • 10 students completed the CNA program at Itawamba Community College
  • 6 students took the CNA examination
  • 5 students passed and were certified
