Mentorship - 2008

Mississippi High School Mentorship Academy 2009

In the fall 2008, the Mississippi Office of Nursing Workforce, along with our funding partners, provided support for eight (8) Mentorship Academies throughout Mississippi. 
A total of 134 high school seniors were given the opportunity to see firsthand what it would be like to work in a hospital/health care environment.  

Funded by: The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Minority Health to the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Mississippi Institute for Improvement of Geographic Minority Health (MIGMH)

Hattiesburg Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

Partners:      
Hattiesburg High School
Forrest General Hospital
Pearl River Community College for CNA

  • 16 students began 8-week Mentorship Academy (2 groups of 8 for two 8-week sessions) at Forrest General Hospital
  • 16 students completed the 8-week Mentorship Academy
  • Graduation sponsored by Forrest General Hospital and ONW as held 
  • 14 students completed the CNA course at Pearl River Community College
  • 6 passed and were certified
  • 6 are in college
  • 2 are known to be working in healthcare (working in LTC facilities in Hattiesburg)

 

Gulf Coast Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

Key’s Technology Center
Ocean Springs High School
Gulf Coast Community College for CNA

  • 19 students began 8-week Mentorship Academy at Ocean Springs Hospital and Singing River Hospital simultaneously
  • 19 students completed the 8-week Mentorship Academy
  • Graduation sponsored by Singing River Health Systems and ONW was held
  • 18 students completed the Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Program at MS Gulf Coast Community College
  • 11 passed and were certified
  • 7 are known to be in college
  • 6 are known to be working in healthcare

Mississippi Baptist Medical Center Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

MS Baptist Medical Center
Ridgeland High School
Bailey Magnet School
Hinds Community College for CNA        

  • 15 students began 8-week Mentorship Academy (2 groups for 8-weeks each
  • 15 students completed the 8-week Mentorship Academy
  • Graduation sponsored by MS Baptist Medical Center and ONW was held
  • 11 students completed the CNA course at Hinds Community College

 

United Way/Way to Work Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

United Way of Monroe County (Way to Work Project)
Monroe High Schools, Allied Health, and GED program
Itawamba Community College for CNA Course
Pioneer Community Hospital of Aberdeen

  • 15 students began 7-week Mentorship Academy (2 groups for 7-weeks each) at Pioneer Community Hospital of Aberdeen
  • 15 students completed the 7-week Mentorship Academy
  • 15 students completed the CNA program at Itawamba Community College
  • 15 passed and were certified

 

North Mississippi Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

Healthcare Foundation of North Mississippi
Itawamba Community College for CNA Course

  • 18 students began 7-week Mentorship Academy at North Mississippi Medical Center
  • 18 students completed the 7-week Mentorship Academy
  • 18 students completed the CNA program at Itawamba Community College
  • 10 passed and were certified

 

Funded by: Federal funds from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security (WIA-funded operations)

Greenwood/Leflore High School Mentorship Academy

Leflore County High School
Greenwood Leflore Hospital
MS Delta Community College for CNA Course

  • 21 students began 7-week Mentorship Academy (2 groups for 7 weeks each)
  • 21 students completed the 7-week Mentorship Academy
  • A graduation ceremony sponsored by Greenwood Leflore Hospital and ONW was held
  • 16 students began a CNA course at Golden Age Nursing Home (course via MS Delta Community College)
  • 14 were tested and 9 passed and were certified

 

Natchez Student Nurse Mentorship Academy

Co-Lin Community College for CNA Course

  • 10 students began 7-week Mentorship Academy
  • 10 Students completed 7-week Mentorship Academy
  • A graduation ceremony sponsored by Natchez Community Hospital and ONW was held
  • 6 students completed the CNA course at Co-Lin Community College at Natchez
  • 6 passed and were certified

MS Job Corps at Crystal Springs

  • 20 students began 8-week Mentorship Academy (3 separate groups) currently in process
  • Job Corps teaches CNA course as part of Mentorship Academy
  • 20 began and completed the CNA course
  • 20 passed and were certified
